The original natural resource that attracted Native Americans to Hemphill County was the bison. Anglo settlers moved into the Panhandle to take advantage of the "sea of grass" that provided limitless food for their open range herds of cattle. The next natural resource to bring people and development into the region was petroleum, and it defined and era, a culture, and an economy. Finding, drilling, and selling oil comprised an industry that left a permanent mark on the history of the Canadian River Valley. Our museum has a small exhibit dedicated to the discovery and production of oil in the area.
