Discover History At Canadian River Valley Pioneer Museum!

Museum Homepage Banner

On Veteran’s Day, Saturday, November 11th, starting at 3pm, the River Valley Pioneer Museum is proud to host Melissa Griswold as she presents her program, “The Great War and the Panhandle.” Last year, Melissa was commissioned to conduct research for a special exhibit at the Panhandle-Plains Museum, “The Great War and the Panhandle-Plains Region.” Melissa traveled all over the Panhandle, including a visit to Canadian, to look for the details of the Great War’s effects on the area. Stories of men and women who left the Panhandle to serve their country emerged. She took these stories and created two lectures. Melissa will return in March to present her second lecture, “The Great War and the Women of the Panhandle.”

Melissa graduated West Texas State University with a degree in Social Studies Education and minors in art and music/vocal performance. She received her Masters of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. After a stint as a missionary in South Africa, she moved back to Amarillo where she taught History and Geography at Amarillo and Friona High Schools. She is a professional genealogist and historical researcher. She is currently the curator/tour guide of the Historic Herring Hotel in Amarillo, TX and researching the history of the Herring Hotel for an upcoming book on the Grand Dame of the Panhandle.

Cara Dawn Macias will have her art show in the gallery room through mid-December. You might find something you can’t live without.

As the weather begins to make changes, museum hours will change as well. We will no longer have Saturday hours until spring. We will be happy to try to accommodate hours for special events with notice before hand. Hours are Tuesday-Friday, 9:00am -5:00pm. Don’t hesitate to call us at 806-323-6548 for more information.
