MUSEUM NOTES: January 12, 2017

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday; we are getting back into the swing of things here at the museum. Right before Christmas we had quite a bit of much needed maintenance done to the outside of the building, as well as updating the restrooms and our break area in the back. Bill Green, our designer, continues to work on text panels for our exhibits and we have all of our videos completed.

The winter months are a slow time of year for us as far as visitors are concerned, but it allows us time to update our computer files, work on new collections we have received and try to organize and plan activities for the coming year. We will begin to work on our membership drive and expect mailings to be out in February. If you are not a member, please consider becoming one. Memberships help us to cover many expenses we incur with our daily operations and to take proper care of the archival items we receive.

Last year we took in Mr. Barnett’s photo collection as he retired. This was a convenient place for those in the community to come look through these family photos. We just recently started listing names of the photos that we still have. If you will “like” River Valley on Facebook, you will find that list as well as other information dealing with the museum and upcoming events. You may also call us at 806-323-6548 if you have questions concerning a name. We will keep these photos until February 1st, then dispose of any not picked up as was our agreement with Mr. Barnett.

During the months of June and July we will have local (armature) photography contest. This is open to all ages and the only rule we have is that the photo is taken in Hemphill county. All we will need from you is your favorite 8x10 photo and we will provide the frame during our show. Visitors to the museum will be welcome to vote on their favorite photo during that time. We hope many of you have your cameras out and have begun to take pictures! As the time draws near we will provide more information concerning this fun exhibit.
