Welcome to the Sagebrush Painters of Canadian. This innovative and energetic group of local painters experiments in a variety of media that includes oil, acrylic, watercolor, and pastel. Forty-eight paintings by fourteen Sagebrush Painter members will remain on display through Jan. 31st, 2003. Please take a moment to drop by our museum and see the colorful expressions of our homegrown talent!
The Sagebrush Painters formed in 1978, dedicated to the proposition that painting clubs should paint! Eschewing monthly meetings and the mountains of procedural detail that bog down organizations in the form of bylaws, minutes, boards, and the minutiae of formality, the Sagebrush Painters meet three times a year. The group has brought in artists to conduct workshops: Stefan Kramer, Ben Konas, and Harold Scott have all worked with the Sagebrush Painters.
The group sponsors one major show during Canadian's annual July 4th celebration. A guest artist typically comes each year. Last year the group showcased Laura Hill of Canadian, who lives in Canyon and works with the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.
The name "Sagebrush
Painters" was chosen due the prevalence of the sand-sage
prairie that typifies the region. Oklahoma pioneer and painter
Augusta Metcalfe, made brushes out of sage, prairie grass, and
other native materials. Members represented at the current exhibit
